Harmony Project Pt.2 - October 2022

Another drive is complete! Once again, I have partnered with Harmony Project to make instruments and music more accessible to those who cannot afford these luxuries.

More information regarding Harmony Project can be found in my first post (see below), but to give a little context, Harmony Project is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California, that has been around for over 20 years now and has been serving underprivileged kids in various ways through music as well as through increasing college accessibility.

This drive consisted of a saxophone, guitar, violins, flute, congos, and supplemental items such as music books and music stands.

Harmony Project - July 2022

Harmony Project is a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles, California. Their mission is to strip down the systematic barriers that exist for underserved children. They believe that through the academic and social support music provides, higher education is both more accessible and more likely to be pursued. Harmony Project provides instruments for underprivileged kids to borrow as well as the proper things needed such as low-cost music lessons, music stands, music books, and more.

This donation consisted of 2 full drum sets, a marching drum kit, many sets of drum sticks, music books, and other drum-related items.

After speaking with one of the Harmony Project team members, I knew this was an organization I wanted to work with. Harmony Project has been around for over 20 years now and has been serving underprivileged kids in various ways not limited to the music department. Music is just where the magic begins. Their main goal is to give all students, regardless of income, background, or zip code, an equal opportunity to access higher education as well as give them the resources they need to succeed in their new environment.

“Harmony Project is a nonprofit organization located in Los Angeles, CA. For the last 21 years, we have provided elementary, middle, and high school students with year-round music education and social service programs across 16 sites in Los Angeles County. Our vision consists of a world in which all students - regardless of income, background, or zip code - have equal access to opportunities and access to the resources needed to thrive in college and beyond. We strive for this on a daily basis and without support and donations from the community, we would not be where we are today” - Harmony Project.

Lennox Middle School - March 2022

Lennox Middle School is located in Lennox, California which is one of the most economically disadvantaged cities in Southern California. The middle school is home to 1500 children, 93% of whom are considered economically disadvantaged.

After speaking with the principal, she stated that “It’s very hard to get funding for areas related to music or theater” which is just another barrier to accessing music in our modern world that is already full of distractions and over-stimulation.

This donation was my largest one yet and it consisted of countless acoustic guitars, electric guitars, violins, violas, amps, speakers, ukuleles, many keyboard pianos, xylophones, and bongos as well as supplemental music items such as music stands, keyboard stands, and music books.

“Music is one of the most difficult areas to receive approved funding for, so instrument donations are greatly appreciated and help us out more than one would think!” - Lennox Middle School

Renaissance Institute of Music - July 2021

The Renaissance Institute of Music was the first organization I collected and donated used instruments to. They are an organization located in Oceanside, California that provides very low-cost, affordable music lessons and instruments for the students to borrow. Their goal is to promote growth, interconnectivity, and equality in the community through of music being played, taught, and implemented in daily life.

This donation was prior to the creation of Music Makes a Difference LA but was my first step towards where I am today. This donation consisted of violins, violas, trumpets, ukuleles, acoustic guitars, and xylophones as well as supplemental musical items such as music stands, music books, cases, etc.

For more information regarding the Renaissance Institute of Music can be found here.

“We have been offering low-cost music lessons for children for a very long time now and donations like this help us keep the price as affordable as we can make it” - Renaissance Institute of Music.
